Stone first came to prominence with the publication of Lust for Life (1934), a vivid fictionalized biography of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. On August 18, 1930, Vincent Van Gogh’s doctor drafted a small, unassuming note describing the artist’s severed ear. Over the next 86 years, the note traveled from its home in Arles, France, to the United States with author Irving Stone and eventually to The Bancroft Library in Berkeley. Irving Stone described Van Gogh in a very balanced and pleasant way both as an artist and a human being.

The book is in very good I had read Passions of the mind, a very good book by Irving Stone, Lust for Life, another good book, and had struggled through a bit too much detail in The Agony and the Ecstasy, until almost to the end, then I never finished it, but did see the movie, which was good.
